School Therapy Dog

Maggie joined the school when she was 12 weeks old, and began her training with in September 2024, at five months old.

She has two handlers: Miss Gray, her owner, and Mrs Hewett, an ELSA/nurture teaching assistant.

Maggie is completing her training with Therapy Dogs UK has passed several early assessments and mock tests, and upon finishing her programme, she will receive accreditation and regular temperament tests to ensure she is suitable for school work.

Since Maggie's introduction, we have seen a "huge increase" in attendance, particularly among pupils who previously struggled to get to school regularly or on time. They love greeting Maggie in the morning, giving her a small walk, brush or stroke before starting their day.

Maggie also participates in small group interventions, often sitting and "listening" to readers, and attending nurture provision sessions where children discuss their worries, learn social skills, or build confidence.

Additionally, children with special educational needs and disabilities have regular sessions with Maggie throughout the day.

Maggie attends school multiple times a week and loves spending time with all of the children.
